SUMMARY:Slovenia\, including Monte Zoncolan
DESCRIPTION:This cycle tour of Slovenia and neighbouring Italy will showcase the absolute best riding in the Julian Alps. \nMessrs Roglic and Pogacar have certainly helped to put this beautiful nation on the map. \nOur six days of riding will include the beautiful lakes at Bled and Bohinj before heading to the cobbled climb of Vrsic that climbs out of Kranjska Gora. \nWe’ll enjoy the beautiful Soca valley and move on to the highest and most challenging climb in Slovenia\, the Mangart Saddle. \nSTOP PRESS! – Seeing the incredible time trial in the 2023 Giro that took the pros up Monte Lussari we’ve decided that we’re going to ride it too! Only recently paved for the Giro\, this seriously tough climb is now open to cyclists\, but only for going up! The obligatory descent is done by cable car! This is one of the most spectacular places you could ever dream of and is an exciting new addition to this trip. \n \nThe latter part of this trip will see us ride into Italy with brief sorties into Austria too. \nMonte Zoncolan will be our final day challenge\, with its 10 kilometres at a 12 per cent gradient –  a tough finale to this dramatically beautiful tour. \nThe Schedule\nSaturday\, August 29th \nCollection of riders from Venice Airport\, followed by transfer (90 minutes) to Cividale del Friuli. \nMake up bikes and then a warm up ride in the pretty Brda region\, just over the border in Slovenia\, known as ‘the Slovenian Tuscany’. \nSunday\, August 30th \nCividale del Friuli to Lake Bohinj – 120kms and 2600m climbing. \nFirst climb if the day will be to Castelmonte before the forested climb to the border. A great descent to the Tolmin valley followed by the challenging climb to Soriska Planina. The day is completed with a swift descent into Bohinj and it’s spectacular lake. \nMonday\, August 31st \nLake Bohinj to Kranjska Gora – 110kms and 2200m climbing. \nThe steady climb of Pokljuka starts our day followed by a circuit of the ‘must visit’ Lake Bled. We’ll then head up the tranquil Radovna valley before arriving in Slovenia’s top ski resort of Kranjska Gora. From there we’ll tackle the classic climb of Vrsic with it’s famous cobbled corners. \nTuesday\, September 1st \nKranjska Gora to Bovec – 100kms and 2600m climbing \nMonte Lussari is first on the agenda\, a very tough climb\, first used in the Giro d’Italia in 2023 where Roglic sealed his victory. It’s a bikes only road and one that you are not allowed to descend! We use a cable car to get back to the valley with our bikes before moving onto the tackle to awesome Mangart Saddle. This is Slovenia’s highest and longest climb at over 2000m and offers incredible\, panoramic views of the Julian Alps. A fast descent into Bovec completes our day. \n  \nWednesday\, September 2nd \nBovec to Passo Pramallo – 120kms and 2500m climbing \nPasso Predel followed soon after by Sella Nevea. We’ll then head up to the beautiful Altopiano di Montasio\, used as a tough summit finish in the Giro Donne. Our final climb of the day from Pontebba up to Passo Pramallo will certainly test us and we’ll stay the night nestled on the Italian/Austrian border. \nThursday\, September 3rd \nPasso Pramallo to Ovaro – 100kms and 2000m climbing \nToday we head towards Zoncolan via a beautiful sortie into Austria. We climb the Plockenpass back into Italy followed by an opportunity to climb Zoncolan from it’s lesser know east side. \nFriday\, September 4th \nThe classic and tough ascent of Zoncolan’s west side is our big objective. Much famed by it’s use in the Giro d’Italia and it’s 10km at an average gradient of 12% will test riders to their limits. We’ll follow Zoncolan with the spectacular climb to the ‘Panoramic Road’ on Monte Crostis to provide a fitting finale to the tour. \nOvaro to Ovaro – 80kms and 2500m climbing \nSaturday\, September 5th \nTransfers to Venice Airport \nWho will enjoy this trip?\nThis is a trip that includes some very steep climbs\, most notably Monte Zoncolan at the end of the trip. Many of the other climbs on the tour have more humble gradients but riders certainly need to be prepared for many hours of climbing! The trip is a spectacular combination of Slovenia and Italy\, riders should be prepared for 5-6 hours of riding each day. As with all our trips\, please drop us a line to discuss your riding level and to ensure that this trip will be an enjoyable on for you. \nWhat’s included\n\n6 days of fully supported rides (mechanical assistance\, vehicle support\, guides).\n7 nights of accommodation\, twin share\, in a combination of Agriturismo and 3/4 star hotel accommodation.\nBreakfast and dinner are included on all days.\nTransfers to and from Venice Marco Polo Airport.\nEnergy drink powder\, bananas\, and pastries are available at all times on the rides.\nAlpine Cadence bidon with a complimentary pack of bars and gels.\n\nWhat we don’t include\n\nTravel insurance.\nLunches.\nFlights.\n\nContact us to learn more or to book. \nTravel information\nFlights into Venice Marco Polo Airport on Saturday August 29th should land before 1400 to leave the airport at around 1500. \nDeparture from Venice Marco Polo Airport on the final Saturday of the trip should ideally depart at 12 midday or later. \nTransfer time at the end of the trip is around 2 hours. \nTalk to us before booking flights to ensure they work conveniently with our transfer times. \nPlease contact us to find out more or to make a booking.

Today we navigate through Sardinia’s central highland area taking on several climbs of very manageable gradients. The highlight of the day is the chance to ride the highest road in Sardina\, beyond Desulo and up to S’Arena\, the high point of our tour at over 1500 metres. \nThursday\, October 1\nTonara – Alghero 145 kilometres 1700\, metres climbing. This day will be long\, taking us northwest towards the coast.  Our route will take us through the colourful riverside port of Bosa before a  dramatic coast-hugging final 45 kilometres into Alghero.  Alghero’s magnificent old town will be the perfect spot for dinner and\, most likely\, one of its spectacular sunsets. \nFriday\, October 2\nAlghero – Palau  150 kilometres\, 1600 metres of climbing. Another big day that incorporates much of the route that the pros used on Giro d’Italia stage 1 in 2017.  On one of the flattest days of our trip\, we’ll eat up the kilometres as we head for lunch in the picturesque town of Castelsardo.  Our afternoon route will take us through the amazing landscape of the Valle Della Luna.  The last 30kms of the day will be gently downhill to the coast and a return to our start point in Palau.  Our last supper will be in an authentic restaurant frequented by the locals\, where we’ll finish our trip with a fantastic choice of Sardinian gastronomy. \nSaturday\, October 3\nReturn transfers to Olbia airport. \nWho will enjoy this trip?\nThis trip will involve considerable distances\, 100 – 150 kilometres each day\, and riders will need to be used to riding such distances. Most of the climbs on the trip will be less severe than those encountered on our Alpine trips\, and as a result\, we’d anticipate that this trip will involve lots of group riding together.  The experience of riding in a group and being comfortable closely following other riders will be useful to enjoy the trip. There will be plenty of opportunity for stronger riders to be challenged with long stretches without navigation issues\, meaning that the group can split if necessary.  The Giro Sardegna (Tour of Sardinia) trip will be limited to 10 riders. \nWhat we include\n\n7 nights of accommodation in a combination of 3/4 star hotels and traditional agriturismos.\n7 breakfasts and 5 dinners.\nFull vehicle support for each of the 6 riding days offering mechanical support and onward transport of luggage.\nGuiding by a qualified coach on all 6 riding days.\nTransfers to and from Olbia airport.\nEnergy drinks\, pastries\, and bananas are available at all times from the support vehicle.\n\nWhat we don’t include \n\nTravel insurance.\nLunches.\nFlights to and from Olbia Airport.\nDinner on the first and final evenings.\n\nTravel information\nFor UK-based travellers\, there are plenty of direct flights from various UK airports with Easyjet to and from Olbia.  For long-haul travellers coming from North America\, Australia etc.\, Milan is a convenient hub with regular flights from Milan Malpensa to Olbia with Easyjet and other airlines.  Our start/finish point on this trip in the port of Palau is only 45 minutes from Olbia Airport and allows plenty of flexibility on arrival/departure times.  Please let us know before booking any flights so that we can confirm their suitability. We can also accommodate riders wanting to extend the trip to more nights at the beginning or end of the trip.  Just let us know what extra nights of accommodation you need\, and we’ll organise that and airport transfers for you. Please contact us to find out more or to make a booking.
